Staying trim, taut, and in terrific shape takes some work but should be relatively easy in Burien, Washington. You have a great choice of indoor and outdoor recreational activities, fitness centers, and healthy eating options. Here are four ways to stay healthy in Burien.

Fitness Training

Whether you’re just starting out on your journey to get fit or trying to maintain a healthy body, fitness training is the best way to go about it. If you don’t feel comfortable in the big impersonal gyms, try a smaller, friendly place like Freedom Fitness on First Avenue South. Their dedicated team will help you achieve your goals with advice and encouragement.

You can choose one-on-one personal training, small group training, athlete training, or you can really challenge yourself with a boot camp class where you’ll be pushed to your limit. They have the latest cardio machines but, along with these, you’ll use kettlebells, punching bags, cable machines, and the indoor field turf. The variety makes training fun.

Walking or Running

Many people enjoy pushing themselves by running or jogging, but walking briskly is just as beneficial for your health and fitness. Whichever you choose, Burien has some beautiful locations where you can exercise, whatever your fitness level.

For an easy workout, Hazel Valley Park, Puget Sound Park, Lake Burien School Park, and Miller Creek Trail have gravel paths of varying, but short lengths, with little or no incline. Mathison Park and Salmon Creek Ravine offer moderate, non-gravel paths with inclines. The variety of trails in Seahurst Park are rated moderate to hard but you’ll be rewarded with lovely forest scenery and stunning views across Puget Sound.

Fun Activities

Taking part in sports and other activities is great for maintaining fitness, and a lot of fun as well. Here are some ideas:

  • Tae Kwon Do gives you a great workout while you also learn a valuable self-defense skill. It will increase your confidence and help your balance, flexibility, and strength.
  • Volleyball is a fun sport that’s easy to learn. Adult drop-in volleyball is held at the Hazel Valley Elementary School gym every Monday and Wednesday, September through May.
  • Zumba combines Latin music and dance moves to give you an aerobic fitness workout. You don’t even have to be able to dance to give it a try.

Contact Burien Community Center for information on these and the other available activities.

Eat Healthy

Eating healthily is an important part of staying in shape, and it doesn’t mean eating boring, tasteless food. Instead of a mid-morning snack, head down to Emerald City Smoothie for a delicious and nutritious drink. Different combinations of ingredients can focus on helping you to lose weight, bulk up, boost your immune system or energy, provide added nourishment, or just give you a tasty and healthy drink.

Hopefully these ideas will keep you in shape while enabling you to have a lot of fun. Getting the family involved may encourage you even more.
