If you are thinking of the best places to go on scenic drives and check out some of the country’s most stunning nature reserves, the state of Washington is the ultimate destination. With towering snowy mountains, pristine lakes, and sprawling national parks, this part of the country amazes even the most experienced travelers. Here are three wonderful destinations you can drive to from the city of Burien, WA.

1. North Cascades National Park

An expansive wilderness area full of towering mountains, old-growth forests, and stunning glaciers, North Cascades National Park is a fantastic destination to take your friends on an unforgettable road trip in your new 2023 Toyota Highlander. Located right along the Canadian border and approximately 120 miles north of Burien, this national park can be reached in a little over two hours by car via routes I-5 and WA-530.

Covering more than half a million acres, North Cascades National Park was established in the late 1960s and draws over 30,000 visitors every year. This nature reserve is almost entirely protected as wilderness, and therefore visitors can find only a few modern amenities. Plenty of beautiful nature trails crisscross the park, and a few designated campgrounds are available for those staying overnight.

2. Olympic National Park

Covering nearly a million acres of lush rain forests, snow-covered mountains, and stunning views of the Pacific coastline, Olympic National Park is another fantastic destination for a road trip with your loved ones. Established in 1938, this national park features an extensive network of nature trails, campgrounds, scenic viewpoints, fishing spots, and boat ramps.

Managed by the National Park Service and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s, Olympic National Park is a place where you can easily spend a few days enjoying nature and taking a break from the urban frenzy. Located a little over 100 miles west of Burien, this national park can be reached in approximately two hours by car via routes I-5 and US-101.

3. Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Featuring scenic waterfalls, pristine lakes, lava tubes, and stunning mountain landscapes, Gifford Pinchot National Forest is located a little over 100 miles south of Burien and is an excellent place to go hiking, wildlife watching, or simply driving around and taking in the stunning views. Boasting over 1.3 million acres of hardwood forests, this national forest is home to several threatened wildlife species. Driving here takes approximately two hours via route WA-410.
