Any kind of car malfunction can jeopardize your safety on the road. Car tires, in particular, should always be kept in tip-top condition to avoid potential skids and blowouts. Here are a few of the most common warning signs to look out for when it comes to your tires. If you ever experience these issues, head to your nearest Toyota dealership for new tires right away.

Persistently Leaking Air

Any tire that can’t hold its air reliably is dangerous to drive on. Not only does under-inflation put a tire at risk of overheating and blowing out, but the hidden puncture that’s leaking the air can also weaken the tire considerably.

To mitigate this risk, measure the tire pressure of each of your tires at least once a month. If you notice any tires falling below the optimal PSI month after month, it’s best to have that tire replaced.

Surface Bulges or Blisters

Bulges of blisters on the outer surface layer of a tire usually indicate trapped air underneath. This air may have escaped from the inner tubing because of an impact with a pothole, curb, or another object. The trapped air and resulting blister weaken the tire and increase its chance of blowing out if you continue to use it.

Punctures in Awkward Positions

Many punctures are repairable, especially if they occur in the treads, which is the thickest part of a tire. However, punctures in awkward places such as the edge of the treads or in the sidewall are harder to repair and usually mean the tire has to go. Likewise, a fresh puncture that occurs close to a previously mended puncture location would also make the tire unsafe to use.

Unevenly Worn Treads

When tire treads wear down unevenly, you can often correct the disparity by rotating the tires. However, if your tires have worn excessively unevenly, perhaps resulting from under-inflation, over-inflation, or some kind of misalignment in the wheels or suspension, then you may need to have all four tires replaced. You’ll also need a technician to diagnose and repair the underlying problem.

Deep Cracks in the Treads

While small cracks in tire sidewalls are not uncommon, sometimes cracks can spread to the tread blocks, where they might threaten the structural integrity of the tire. If you notice cracks spreading to the treads and deepening considerably, have the weakened tire replaced with a new one.

Diminished Traction on the Road

At the end of the day, a tire’s primary job is to maintain solid traction on all road surfaces. If you ever sense reduced traction, have your tires inspected at once and consider replacements.
