The catalytic converter, often known as simply the “cat,”  is designed to convert harmful emissions from the engine into less harmful substances before they leave the exhaust system. An efficient cat not only ensures reduced pollution but also supports optimal vehicle performance. Let’s identify the tell-tale signs that might suggest a replacement from your Toyota dealership is in order.

Decreased Fuel Efficiency

One of the primary symptoms of a failing cat is a sudden drop in miles per gallon. The converter, when clogged or contaminated, forces the engine to work harder, leading to increased fuel consumption. If you find yourself visiting the gas station more frequently without a corresponding increase in miles driven, it’s wise to consider checking.

Reduced Engine Performance

A malfunctioning converter can seriously hamper the overall performance of your Toyota. It can cause the engine to feel sluggish, especially during acceleration. This is because a faulty converter can restrict exhaust flow, causing the engine to run at a higher temperature and preventing it from breathing properly.

Check Engine Light Illuminates

If the onboard diagnostic system detects an inefficiency in the cat, the check engine light might come on. While this light can indicate various issues, if it appears in conjunction with other symptoms mentioned here, you need a converter check.

Rattling Noises

Should you hear an unusual rattling sound coming from beneath your vehicle, especially when it’s stationary, it might be due to a deteriorating cat. Internal components can break and cause this noise, indicative of an imminent converter failure.

Sulfuric Smell

A malfunctioning converter can cause the unburned fuel to emit a strong sulfuric or rotten egg smell. This is because the converter isn’t effectively processing the exhaust gases. If you detect this distinct odor, especially during hard acceleration or when climbing a steep incline, it could be a sign of a failing converter.

Discoloration or Visible Damage

It’s a good practice, especially if you suspect converter issues, to give it a visual inspection. If you notice signs of discoloration, which indicates overheating, or any visible external damages or rust, it might be time for a replacement.

Slow Engine Start

A clogged converter can cause resistance against the engine’s normal airflow. This might lead to difficulties in starting the engine or a noticeable delay before the engine kicks to life.
